I have been teaching students how to master the skew for decades. I always start with skew planing as the fundamental skew cut. Once you master this cut, you will be well on your way to confident use of the tool. I’ll first show you how to practice the cut. Plan on working a number of practice pieces before tackling actual projects. Later in the book we will build on that foundation and look at other more advanced skew cuts. Applications The number one application for the planing cut is spindle work where the grain of the wood is parallel to the bed of the lathe.

I like a bowl or vessel to sit on a rim, whether footed or not, as opposed to a fully flat surface. With this chuck you can deep-hollow a foot, add details such as beads or lines or any other surprise you may wish to give the viewer. You can also fully round the underside. Finish-sand to complete the work. Remove the chuck with the work still attached and place it on the bench. Then remove the wing nuts, bolts and ring. Special Thanks Eldon Rebhorn showed a version of this chuck in a book written in the 1960s.

Tilt your drill press table to 5°, put a ⅜" bit in the chuck and drill the holes (Photo 4). Use a fence to ensure that all the holes are the same distance from the tapered edges of the legs. Reset the fence for the front bottom rail holes. Temporarily clamp together the legs and all four rails. Using a hand drill and the same ⅜" bit, extend each bolthole into its corresponding rail (Photo 5). Disassemble the base. If necessary, drill these holes deeper. Lay out the holes for the copper tubes that will hold the nuts directly from the holes you just drilled.
